ABC NEWS: The 2024 Election Could Have a Big Impact on Education Policy

An article by Jennifer Vilcarino from ABC News highlights how the upcoming 2024 election could significantly influence education policy, particularly in relation to school choice. While issues like the economy and immigration dominate the national conversation, education remains a critical, if understated, focus. At the heart of the debate is school choice—programs that give families access to alternative education options like private schooling, homeschooling, and religious education through vouchers and Educational Scholarship Accounts (ESAs). As Vilcarino reports:

“In 2024 alone, Georgia and Louisiana have created voucher and educational scholarship account programs, while South Carolina's Supreme Court ruled its ESA program unconstitutional. ESAs and school vouchers allow public funding to go toward private education, which can include alternative forms of education and homeschooling.”

School choice programs like ESAs are gaining overwhelming support across the country. According to a recent poll, 65% of Americans favor ESAs, and 60% support vouchers. These programs offer crucial alternatives for families seeking an education that aligns with their values and aspirations for their children. As more states put school choice on the ballot, the momentum behind these initiatives continues to grow, with families recognizing the freedom these programs bring. Vilcarino continues:

"In November, three states will vote on ballot measures related to school choice... Supporters of repeal believe Bill 1402 takes funding away from public schools; opponents of repeal say it would prevent parents and students from choosing the school that best fits their needs."

School choice programs, like ESAs, bolster families who otherwise wouldn’t have the financial means to provide their children with quality education. These programs do not drain public resources but rather ensure that every child, regardless of economic background, can access the educational path that best fits their needs and values.

With so much at stake, it is critical for voters to make their voices heard in the upcoming election. Education policy, especially when it comes to school choice, will be shaped by the decisions made at the ballot box. Every vote counts in securing educational freedom and ensuring all families have the right to choose the best path for their children.
